The SMI is a spectator-friendly event and a fantastic community atmosphere. Here’s what to know before you arrive.
Are spectators welcome?
Absolutely. All family members, friends, and supporters are welcome at the SMI. Come cheer loud!
Is there an admission fee?
Admission is FREE! No tickets or passes required โ just show up and cheer.
Where do spectators sit?
Seating is in the outdoor spectator area around the competition pool. Lawn chairs and blankets are recommended. Shade is limited, so plan accordingly.
Where should I park?
Parking details and any lot assignments will be shared in advance of the meet. Arrive early โ with 1,300+ swimmers, it gets busy fast!

What to Expect
Here’s how a typical SMI race day flows so you’re never caught off guard.
Arrive Early
Team check-in opens well before warm-ups. Give yourself extra time for parking and getting your swimmer set up with their team.
Warm-Up Session
Lanes are assigned per team for warm-up. Swimmers should report to their coach before warm-up begins.
Competition Begins
Events run in order from the heat sheet. Listen for announcements calling swimmers to the ready bench before each event.
Awards & Recognition
High-point awards and team trophies are presented at the end of the meet. Don’t pack up too early!
Families FAQ
Can I bring my own food and drinks?
Yes! Outside food and non-alcoholic beverages are welcome. Concessions are also typically available on-site. Alcohol is not permitted.
How do I find out what heat and lane my swimmer is in?
Heat sheets with all event, heat, and lane assignments are available before the meet. Your coach will provide these, or they may be posted at the meet.
What if my swimmer needs to scratch an event?
Scratches must be handled by the coach or team rep at the official scratch table. Do not approach the timing table directly.
Is photography allowed?
Yes, personal photography for your own family is welcome. Commercial photography requires advance approval from the meet director.
What’s the weather usually like?
It’s July in East Tennessee โ expect hot, humid weather. Morning sessions can be pleasant, but afternoon temperatures frequently exceed 90ยฐF. Sunscreen, shade, and water are essential.
Who do I contact if I have a question at the meet?
Find your team’s coach or rep first. The SMI information table will be staffed throughout the meet for general questions.
